Embracing Comfort: The Best Wear for Alaska’s Unique Climate

Hey Babes!!!!! I’m back and better than ever!! I’ve been going through some life changes like leaning off of social media like Instagram and traveling lately with my husband. This month, I had the opportunity to go to Alaska for the first time with my husband and his crew. And let me just say, Alaska was breathtaking. To the point where taking photos wasn’t enough to catch the beauty of the state. I also learned that it was a shock when it came to the immediate change of weather from going from hot weather to cold. That's what inspires this topic for my blog, I needed comfort rather than fashion for this trip. So when it comes to dressing for the Alaskan wilderness, comfort is key. With its breathtaking landscapes and the changing weather conditions, Alaska demands clothing that not only keeps you warm but also allows for freedom of movement and adaptability. Let’s explore some essential comfort wear perfect for navigating this stunning state.

Layering Essentials

Base Layers

Start with a good base layer that wicks moisture away from your skin. Look for materials like wool or synthetic fabrics that provide insulation without bulk. Long-sleeve tops and thermal leggings are your best friends here. They’ll keep you cozy during those chilly mornings and can easily be layered for warmth. Especially for the hikes and excursions that I’ve been on since I was there, I NEEDED it.

Mid Layers

For the mid layer, go for a fleece or lightweight down jackets. These pieces provide insulation while remaining breathable, perfect for when you’re on the move. A zip-up fleece can be adjusted for temperature control, ensuring you stay comfortable whether you’re hiking through the woods or enjoying a quiet moment by the fire. You can’t imagine how much of these we got from REI. Let’s just say we are official members of REI now.

Outer Layers

Waterproof Shells

Alaska's weather can change in an instant, so a waterproof and windproof shell is a must. Look for jackets with ventilation zippers to keep you cool during high energy activities. My favorite was the zipper in the armpit area for ventilation. It didn’t work much but it was nice to have.  Brands that focus on outdoor gear often have great options that balance durability and comfort, just like Patagonia, Columbia, REI Co-op, The North Face, Etc.

Insulated Pants

Don’t overlook the importance of insulated pants. Whether you’re roaming through the glaciers, hiking in the rain or exploring a coastal town, insulated, water-resistant pants will keep you warm and dry. Many styles come with adjustable waists and zippered pockets, making sure you have loads of mobility while maintaining a sleek look.

Footwear

Comfortable Boots

When it comes to footwear, comfort and support are crucial. Invest in a good pair of waterproof hiking boots that provide ankle support and traction. We got to choose many from REI like Merrels, I got mine from a huge sale at Adidas Outlet Store. It was their new terrex series, made for hiking or exploring rigid areas. Look for options with removable insoles for customization and a breathable lining to keep your feet dry. Definitely consider water shoes too if you go packrafting like us. It is so difficult to dry hiking shoes when you don’t have a boot dryer.

Cozy Socks

Never underestimate the power of good socks! Merino wool or moisture wicking socks will keep your feet warm and blister free. Layering thinner moisture wicking socks under thicker wool ones can be a game changer during long excursions. Don’t be like me and use regular long ankle length socks, I got cold real fast.

Accessories

Hats and Gloves

Accessories can make or break your comfort level in Alaska. A warm, snug beanie is essential, and don’t forget a pair of insulated gloves or mittens. Look for touch screen compatible options so you can stay connected without sacrificing warmth.

When dressing for Alaska, the key is to find that perfect balance between style and functionality. Don’t shy away from colors and patterns! I may have worn loads of black on my trip but I tried so hard to put a little color into my outfits for Alaska. Modern outdoor wear comes in a variety of stylish options that allow you to express your personality while still being prepared for the elements.

In Alaska, comfort wear is about more than just staying warm,  it’s about enjoying the beauty of the great outdoors without sacrificing style. By layering smartly, investing in quality pieces, and embracing the spirit of adventure, you’ll be ready to explore everything this incredible state has to offer.
