Detroit Takes New York: Michigan Fashion Week Is Making Its NYFW Debut

    The Midwest is heading to Manhattan and Michigan fashion is ready for its New York moment.

Heyyyy Babess! Guess what!?! I'm going to New York Fashion Week!!!! Yes, you heard that right! There is something incredibly exciting about watching a fashion community grow beyond the place it calls home. This September, that is exactly what is happening as Michigan Fashion Week makes its first-ever New York Fashion Week debut with Detroit Takes New York Fashion Week on Saturday, September 12, 2026. 

For more than a decade, Michigan Fashion Week has created a platform for emerging and established designers, models, photographers, stylists, beauty professionals and other creatives to showcase their work and build meaningful connections within the fashion industry. Now, that mission is getting an even bigger stage.

And as someone who has had the opportunity to be part of Michigan Fashion Week and watch the creativity behind this community firsthand, seeing MFW head to New York feels like such a special milestone.

This isn't simply another runway show.

This is Detroit taking New York.

From the Midwest to Manhattan

When people think about American fashion, New York, Los Angeles and Miami are usually among the first cities that come to mind.

But there is an incredible amount of fashion talent coming out of the Midwest and Michigan Fashion Week has spent years helping create a space where that talent can be discovered.

Detroit especially has always had its own point of view. It's bold. It's artistic. It's unexpected. There is a certain confidence and grit behind Detroit creativity that doesn't need to imitate another city to make an impact.

That is what makes this New York showcase so exciting.

Instead of trying to turn Michigan fashion into New York fashion, Michigan Fashion Week is bringing Michigan's creative identity directly to New York.

On September 12, designers and creatives connected to MFW will have the opportunity to showcase their work in one of the most influential fashion cities in the world, putting Midwest talent in front of a new audience of fashion lovers, media, industry professionals and creatives.

So, What Can You Expect?

First and foremost: fashion.

Guests can expect curated runway presentations featuring emerging and established designers and brands, with collections that showcase the creativity and individuality Michigan Fashion Week has become known for. 

But the experience goes beyond simply sitting down and watching models walk a runway.

The evening is also set to include red carpet arrivals, fashion industry networking, media coverage, exclusive photo opportunities and an official after-party following the showcase. 

In other words, come ready for a full fashion-night-out experience.

And yes, come dressed to be photographed.

It's New York Fashion Week, after all.

Discovering the Designers Before Everyone Else Does

One of my favorite things about regional fashion weeks is the opportunity to discover designers before their names become familiar everywhere.

There is something special about seeing a collection from an emerging designer and realizing you're watching the beginning of their story.

Michigan Fashion Week has made supporting and showcasing emerging talent a central part of its mission, alongside established designers and fashion professionals. 

Bringing that platform to New York gives these creatives something even more valuable: visibility outside of their home market.

A runway show can be beautiful, but the people sitting around that runway matter too.

Connections with photographers, stylists, influencers, editors, buyers, content creators and other designers can turn one evening into future collaborations and opportunities.

That's why this showcase feels bigger than September 12.

It's about what could happen after September 12.

Expect Detroit Energy— In New York City

Detroit fashion has never been about playing it safe.

That's exactly the energy I hope people experience when Michigan Fashion Week arrives in New York.

Expect personality.

Expect creativity.

Expect designers with stories to tell.

Expect looks that make you turn your head.

Expect cameras flashing, people connecting, creators making content, fashion lovers meeting each other and plenty of moments you'll want to capture before the night is over.

Most importantly, expect to see another side of the American fashion industry, one that proves incredible talent isn't limited to the traditional fashion capitals.

More Than a Fashion Show

What makes this moment especially meaningful is what it represents for Michigan's creative community.

Every time a Michigan designer, model, stylist, photographer or creative enters a new market, it helps open another door for the person coming behind them.

Michigan Fashion Week describes itself as a place where fashion, creativity and business collide, providing a platform for designers while connecting them with fashion enthusiasts, media and industry professionals. 

Taking that philosophy from Michigan to New York feels like a natural next chapter.

This is an opportunity to say:

We're here.

We're creating.

And the Midwest deserves a seat at the fashion table.

What to Wear

Now for one of my favorite questions: What do you wear to a Michigan Fashion Week show during NYFW?

My answer? This is not the night to be afraid of fashion.

NYFW is one of those rare opportunities where wearing something a little dramatic, unconventional or completely you just makes sense.

Mix textures. Wear the statement shoes. Carry the unusual handbag. Layer jewelry. Play with proportions. Pull out the piece sitting in your closet that you've been waiting for an excuse to wear.

You don't necessarily need to be dressed in head-to-toe designer clothing, either. Some of the best Fashion Week looks mix vintage, thrifted pieces, independent designers, high street fashion and luxury accessories.

The goal isn't to look expensive.

The goal is to look like yourself:  turned all the way up.
